John Tomac Does Motocross

John Tomac, a mountain biking legend, has had his focus turned to motocross. For the last ten years or so, he's had his attention turned towards his son Eli Tomac who in his rookie year has done some very impressive things including winning a heat race in the 250 pro class. When I first heard the name, Tomac, I entertained the thought that he just might be the son of "Johnny T", but this week when John made an appearance, my seemingly wild assumption was confirmed to be true! Watching Eli race has been really fun, and he's currently in 2nd place in season points standings, but he'll have a fight on his hands as he gets through his rookie mistakes and try to beat a group of really talented riders.

Eli has some big shoes to fill, but he looked to be well on his way in both motos last weekend in the Texas heat. He had a sizable lead, then faded really badly in the last 5 laps or so. He just hit a wall, twice! Maybe it was nerves, maybe just the heat, maybe a rookie mistake. He'll have to work on his conditioning, endurance, and pace himself a bit more if he wants to continue to do well. He's proven he has the speed, but it was the Frenchman Pourcel that got the win in Freestone and who holds the points lead on the season. By the way, in case you haven't heard..Frenchie can ride! Pourcel got a terrible start and fought back to get a very unlikely overall points win on the day helped out by a few mistakes from other riders..Dean Wilson, for example, made a mental error, but he'll be back this week. The next installment, The Rockstar Energy High Point National will air Live on NBC Sports June 12, 3:30 p.m. EST, although the 250's won't be shown until Sunday June 13 at 6:00 p.m. EST on Speed.
