X-Games Step UP Controversy, Who Won?

I'm not sure how many of you tuned in to X-Games last night, but in case you didn't one of the most entertaining events for us is the Moto Step-Up. It's basically a high jump with dirt bikes. The current record is held by Tommy Clowers at 35 feet set in 2000. In last night's event they were down to 2 final riders Ronnie Renner and RC(Ricky Charmichael). They were both having problems clearing 35' and had already missed 3 times each at this height. The announcers(one of which wrote the rule book on this event) said that in this case they were to move the run-in 5 feet further back to give them more opportunity to pick up speed for the jump. Charmichael landed bad and decided to quit the event. The organizers decided to give them both Gold medals! This might seem great to some people, but I think they need to avoid this if at all possible. It's not fulfilling to anyone! You could tell that Renner was trying to celebrate, but really couldn't because he didn't win. Freaking ridiculous! Why not let Renner try at 5' further back at the same height? If he makes the height and RC can't go again then Renner should get the gold. Since Renner was on a 2-stroke the 5' further run-in would have made a huge difference since he was having a harder time hooking up than the big 4-strokes. OR, if he misses give RC the win because he had hit the bar less times during the event, anything but a freaking tie!! Give the guy left standing a chance to pin it and win it! They were afraid someone was going to get hurt! That's X-Games man!..bones heal. Where's the glory in settling for a tie?? Maybe step-up is still too new to warrant much danger, not enough exposure yet?? I guess I'm pissed because I wanted Renner to pull it off with the 2-stroke, RC went down(the "greatest of all time") and they just gave them both Golds. I heard one of the announcers say, "well Charmichael gave it his all, so he should get a gold", BS!! When was the last time someone got a gold for giving it their all?? If it was motocross RC would race all busted up. Either he's retired or not! Let them finish the game!

  2. Yea, maybe. I was bummed at the outcome. A new record would have been cool. They both had 3 chances at that height though. I guess I would have just liked them to take a little longer to make sure they were going by the official rules and not put the riders on the spot to settle for duel golds. If that's what the rules state, the so be it, but that's not what the announcers were saying.

  5. I watched a lot of X-games this year and disappointed several times-- the tie in Step-up, the lame 'best trick' in moto-x (the one guy didn't even try a trick, and the guy that won did the same trick he did last year), etc. It's has been so good the last two years, not really sure what happened??

  6. I agree. At least Bilko was redeemed partially by winning the freestyle event...yea, what's up with the dude not even doing a trick?? Willey somebody..LAME DUDE! It's worth a busted body to at least try the trick. You're on the biggest stage and screw yourself. That will follow him forever, just one thing that seperates guys like Pastrana, Deegan etc. from the others. I still haven't watched the rally car coverage from our dvr, I hope it's ok. Super-x and Freestyle were good. I even enjoyed watching Nate Adams wrecking off the entrance ramp HEhe:)

  7. I finally got around to watching the rally car event..that was a dissapointment too! Good race until Pastrana made a dumb mistake and wedged the car into the wall.:(
